Bluefish In The Surf 03/02/2016

Found fish in the surf tonight and it was fun. Whiting were all around my feet in huge numbers and Mullet up to 18 inches were stacked in and around my legs. It was amazing to see so many fish in one place. There must have been 100,000 of them.

Kept casting to the smaller mullet and bait fish. Had one Speckled Trout on and I caught two bluefish. They are great fighters but after smoking one all day the best they can be likened to is Sardines. I think I could eat a few but not many.

Been a wild winter with hunting deer in Kansas and then Christmas with the grandkids so have needed to get caught up. I have been fishing on the Jetty here quite a bit and so far getting some Whiting, Sheepshead and Pompano.

Most have been caught on a rising tide and off color water with Shrimp Bites and a small piece of shrimp on a #6 hook. I like the smaller hook while others swear by a big hook so try it out and see what you think.

Took a guided Bay Fishing trip today and results were dismal. Probably 15 Whiting and a few Sand Trout were boated by 15 people so not too good a day. A front was moving in so maybe that put them off.

I plan on taking some more trips as its pretty cheap at $20 for 4 hours and bait and tackle are provided. Not bad for a day on the water. Its not my favorite kind of fishing but still fun.

I took the day off from fishing due to having to get my RV warranty work done. Heartland Campers are to be commended for their warranty department. Ron Scarberry is the best rep I have ever worked with. It took a year but finally getting it all done.

Delays were due to me being on the road so much and living in my camper full time. Found a mobile service and they did a superb job. Kudos to Sierra Rv in Port Isabel. THESE PPL ARE GOOD and efficient and fair.

Walked to the beach to fish a bit this evening but forgot my license so Paula and I came home and did some laundry etc. I did see Whiting and Sheepshead being caught down there so its heating up for sure.

I think a kayak or boat of some kind is going to have to come into the household before next year so I can access the flats in the bay.

Paula wants a paddle board and I also am thinking a Hobie Cat Sailboat and bikes. Have a great Triton aluminum trailer I can convert to hold it all. Living on the road full time makes for having a lot of gear a lot harder. have to plan more and find a way.

Had a nice afternoon fishing in the pass. Nothing much biting but Whiting. These gave me a great fight on light tackle and I was able to get enough for several meals. They fillet easily and have very white flakey meat for any dish you want to prepare. I did see a large Redfish come off the Jetty too so they are starting to move in with the increase in water temperatures.

Its been a cold winter so the fish are definitely not in yet.

Sheepshead continue to be caught in good numbers with live shrimp. Finally got my fill of them and going to go out and see about catching some Red Snapper on a boat trip. Will keep you apprised of that as it happens.
