Fishing Report June 26, 2014

Our summer weather pattern has arrived and the fish are biting well with the increase in temperatures. Given that Beaver and Continental Reservoirs are closed for repairs, the other area lakes are seeing an increase in anglers present on any given day.

Good reports are coming out of Rio Hondo Reservoir with Power Bait type presentations being the most successful. Fish are also being caught on lures such as rapalas and spoon types when fished slow.

Fishing Report May 29, 2014

The lakes have opened up from their winter under the ice and that always means hungry trout are searching for food. I usually don’t fish the warm water lakes out in the San Luis Valley but I do fish the higher mountain lakes in our area.

Big Meadows Reservoir on Wolf Creek Pass will once again be a great spring and summer fishery. I quickly caught my limit of fat stocker Rainbow Trout using the BB shaped Power Bait this week. I also caught a number of fish on Prince Nymphs in the area streams so the bite is on.

Fishing Report August 15, 2014 South Fork Colorado

And, while you are out there, take your gear as fishing is still good. Poage Lake produced some beautiful Cutthroats last week. And this Tuesday, I took some younger relatives to Big Meadows. Armed with the newer bait that looks like a small rubbery pea in pink and rainbow colors on a number 6 gold hook, we limited quickly. Bubble fly-fishing was also successful thanks to the clouds and a slight breeze. (Don’t let the parking area discourage you, there is shoreline a plenty.) Other area lakes such as Beaver Lake, Road Canyon and Continental still producing limits for everyone I know. The creeks are also very good right now and small flies will let you have a great fly fishing experience. Cooper and I will see you out there!
