Fishing Report October 1 2014

I have been up on the area streams some this week and can report huge numbers of fish seen in the water when looking in the pools. The water is extremely clear at this time of year and it takes a careful approach to catch them now. Small flies in size 20 and 22 are best now. The fishing is very good early and late as the fish cannot see you approach as well at those times. Recent rains raised the Rio Grande again and so it’s a tad murky but my son caught two nice trout in about 20 minutes so it’s still fish-able.

Lakes are also producing fish as they are trying to pack on the weight before winter sets in and the lakes ice over. Trolling is working best but I saw some nice pan size fish caught at Big Meadows off the shore on pink Power Bait. One guy in the RV park did pull in two 19” Rainbows out of Road Canyon on bubble-fly setup casting a size 14 Renegade. He reportedly was fishing just off the boat ramp.

Our summer weather pattern has arrived and the fish are biting well with the increase in temperatures. Given that Beaver and Continental Reservoirs are closed for repairs, the other area lakes are seeing an increase in anglers present on any given day.

Good reports are coming out of Rio Hondo Reservoir with Power Bait type presentations being the most successful. Fish are also being caught on lures such as rapalas and spoon types when fished slow.

This week found Cooper and me out and about testing the famous waters around the South Fork area and we were not disappointed in our results. Fish came easily to the bank at every spot we tried and it is very encouraging for summer to be a bountiful time for all.

With Beaver Reservoir drained for work on the dam, Big Meadows is going to take a lot of pressure this summer. For now however, the fishing remains excellent from the shore on the prepared baits like Power Bait or other brands.  My favorite is the little rubber like balls now sold in those same flavors as they stay on the hook so well and it’s easy to catch 4 fish without having to rebait.

The lakes have opened up from their winter under the ice and that always means hungry trout are searching for food. I usually don’t fish the warm water lakes out in the San Luis Valley but I do fish the higher mountain lakes in our area.

Big Meadows Reservoir on Wolf Creek Pass will once again be a great spring and summer fishery. I quickly caught my limit of fat stocker Rainbow Trout using the BB shaped Power Bait this week. I also caught a number of fish on Prince Nymphs in the area streams so the bite is on.
