Hiking With Dennis June 15, 2015

Wayne led us up the Archuleta trail, a spectacular venture in a beautiful setting.  The waterfalls and cascades are awesome to see and hear, all of that hydro power on display.

Prior to hitting the trail we took the opportunity to take our group photo in front of the mirrored images of the snow, trees and sky reflected by the lake surface.......first time I have ever seen snow reflected by this lake.

The beetle has killed a lot of the spruce; I think this is allowing more sunlight to reach the forest floor which in turn encourages the wild flowers and lower growing vegetation to flourish.....maybe?

I have some videos of the waterfalls, will try to compress them into smaller file size and send them out later.........

Doug will be leading a hike Wednesday, come out and find out where he will be taking you.  I plan on going from Shorty Spring to the La Garita creek crossing Friday, if the creek is negotiable then we will go on further.........Meet at the South Fork Visitors Center at 9 am,

Hiking With Dennis June 12, 2015

We hiked into the Natural Arch from the East just to be different; it was!  Does anybody know what a whole lot of lichen is called?  Would it be a patch, a spread, a bed or what do you think?

It was a good day for hiking, overcast with a little sun and just a few sprinkles, enough to get my rain jacket on and then it quit.........

We will be hiking Monday, Wayne will lead us on another interesting 5 mile hike...........

Hiking With Dennis June 8, 2015

Wayne led us up an old logging road for about 2.5 miles, it was a little steep and would be rated a "moderate" hike.  We found the purple lupine diner open so that is where we had our lunch.  We were on the NE shoulder of Agua Ramon mountain.........

Lots of  wildflowers, in about a week the drive into Cathedral CG should be beautiful............

Hiking With Dennis June 5, 2015

We visited 2 kilns, one in ruins the other still in fair shape.  The moisture we have received the last 6 weeks has brought out the wildflowers like I haven't seen for several years.  Even in this "dry" region the flowers were flourishing. After seeing the kilns we hiked on up a ways and went up to a high point for our lunch.  Welcome to Bill & Karen Early to our hiking group, hope you enjoy the outings as much as we do..........

Next Fridays hike will be a bit harder, we will go to the Natural Arch but approach it from the East, which is a longer and off-trail route.

Remember our hike on Monday, Wayne will lead us on a good outing..............9AM at the South Fork Visitors Center, South Fork Colorado

Hiking With Dennis May 2015

Many thanks to Dennis Shepherd who takes us on hikes each week in the South Fork, Colorado area. He is both knowledgeable and experienced in all areas of outdoor lore and so brings us great information and pictures each week.

From Dennis,

Wayne led us up the Bear Cr. road for almost 3 miles before stopping for lunch.  We didn't see any wildlife today other than a road kill ground squirrel..........

We got a little wet about a mile from the trucks on the return trip, seems like it rains a little bit each day, which is great for the wildflowers and mushrooms later on.

Come join us next Monday at 9AM at the Visitors Center for another great hike and fellowship..
